What is the real color of the Martian Sky? Well, in fact - and so far - nobody really knows. Many things have been written and many informed opinions have been made available to the Public, but not matter how reliable was the source of the information, the truth is that this subject (which might seem just trivial, but it is not - do not forget that the natural colors of an environment ALWAYS help Researchers to better understand it) is still covered by doubts and, sometime, by really huge and contradictory visions.

Uo po now, the Sky of Mars, as colorized by the NASA Scientists and Experts in their official "True", "Almost True", "Approximately True" and then "Natural Colors", has never shown the same color or, at least, a coherent and convincing color. At the beginning of the Martian Exploration (we talk about the Viking Landers and the Soujourner-Pathfinder), we have seen, in the NASA pictures, Red Skies, Dark Orange Skies, Yellow, Butterscotch, Pink, Blue and even Greenish Skies. A total confusion, unfortunately. Afterwards, with the continuous and fascinating adventures of the MER (Mars Exploration Rovers) Spirit (now officially "deceased") and Opportunity (still alive and operational), and with some help from the Phoenix Lander, we thought that some clarity might have been made on this topic but...we were wrong.

The Sky of Mars remain something "strange", something truly "alien", something extremely hard to imagine and, in the end, almost impossible to see in its REAL Natural Colors. We, as IPF, have tried many times to show to the Public what we really believe that the Martian Sky should look like, and today's APOD is our contribution to this continuing investigation. If you have any opinion about it, please do not hesitate to contact us.

This frame has been colorized in Absolute Natural Colors (such as the colors that a human eye would actually perceive if someone were on the Surface of Mars and then looked up towards the Sky), by using an original technique created - and, in time, dramatically improved - by the Lunar Explorer Italia Team.
