Possible Transient Luminous Event at Spirit's Landing Site
Possible Transient Luminous Event at Spirit's Landing Site

A long time has come and gone, since the NASA - Mars Exploration Rover (MER) Spirit moved its "early steps" on the dusty plain of Gusev Crater - Mars. This GIF-Movie, relevant to the Martian Days (or Soles, in Latin) 10 and 11, shows us something interesting and, so far, unexplained: a bright "spark" lit-up during the Sol 11 and, as it seems quite obvious even to the untrained eyes, moved a little bit around, before disappearing. What was it? Nobody knows nor can say for sure. If the "spark" had not moved, we could have assumed that it was (better yet: that it should have been) a piece of metal that probably detached from the Spacecraft during its (however) rough landing or, more likely, after the air-bags deflated and Spirit's "nest" opened. As a matter of fact (and in support of this aforementioned possibility), we have to draw to your attention the circumstance that, only a few Soles later, a piece of metal of some sort was actually photographed by Spirit during its early movements on the Martian Surface.

Are we talking about the same object, then? We repeat: it is not possible to know for sure. What we DO know for sure is that the spark, very well visible in this GIF-Movie, is NOT an image-artifact.

Another (slightly exotic though) possibility, suggested by our Research Group, is that the NASA - MER Spirit witnessed a "Transient Luminous Event - TLE" that occurred only a few meters away from its cameras. A Transient Event that, unfortunately, we cannot fully explain, even though a few hypothesis (after almost seven years from its happening) are still being evaluated. It is however important to say that, during Spirit's trip towards the Columbia Hills, other possible TLEs were recorded by the MER cameras. TLEs that, as we have already said, nobody has so far been able to explain in a well substantiated - and therefore fully convincing - way (unfortunately, not even our NASA Friends).
